GovRAMP Launches AI Security Task Force

GovRAMP Launches AI Security Task Force

Initiative aims to strengthen cybersecurity and trust standards for AI in public sector cloud products

Indianapolis, IN — April 24, 2025 — Generative AI is rapidly transforming cloud technologies, introducing new and complex cybersecurity challenges for public sector organizations. In response, GovRAMP has launched the AI Security Task Force — a cross-sector initiative focused on enhancing cybersecurity and trust standards for AI-enabled cloud solutions used across government.

The Task Force will be guided by the GovRAMP AI Executive Council, a group of executive public sector technology leaders providing strategic oversight. Council members include:

  • Laura Clark, Chief Information Officer, Michigan
  • Ryan Murray, Chief Information Security Officer, Arizona
  • Dr. Craig Orgeron, Chief Information Officer, Mississippi
  • Tony Sauerhoff, Chief Information Security Officer, Texas
  • Jason Snyder, Chief Information Officer, Massachusetts
  • Tarek Tomes, Chief Information Officer, Minnesota
  • Nathan Willigar, Chief Information Security Officer, Maine

These leaders will help shape the Task Force’s priorities and ensure alignment with the cybersecurity and operational needs of state and local governments nationwide.

The Task Force brings together member representatives from both the public and private sectors. Participants will collaborate to identify risks unique to generative AI and recommend enhancements to the GovRAMP Security Program that support the secure, responsible adoption of AI-powered cloud products. To guide its work, the Task Force will reference well-established federal cybersecurity frameworks, including NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. These foundational standards serve as the basis for many public-sector cybersecurity programs. By aligning with them, the Task Force aims to propose targeted additions or overlays that address AI-specific risk considerations while reinforcing consistency across federal, state, and local systems.

“GovRAMP has always operated at the intersection of innovation and trust,” said Leah McGrath, Executive Director of GovRAMP. “The launch of the AI Security Task Force marks an important step toward equipping public sector organizations to adopt AI responsibly and securely.”
